Considerations for Health, Safety, and Efficiency

From Root River Energy's Spring 2009 Newsletter...

As Root River Energy’s wind project moves forward steadily with signing landowners onto our community project, many have started to wonder about the next phases of our development. One common question is how we will determine the location and placement of the wind turbines.

While there are many factors to consider, one of the things Root River Energy is most deliberate about is making sure that there are adequate setbacks from human developments. Setbacks from residences and areas of high population are established in compliance with noise ordinances under Minnesota law.

Generally setbacks are established at a minimum of 1,200 feet to help to ensure the health and safety of nearby residents. Even at 750 feet, the sound that can be heard from most turbines is approximately equivalent to the sound of a refrigerator while standing in one’s kitchen. Another important consideration for Root River Energy is to space the turbines far enough apart so that they operate at maximum productivity. Wind turbines need be given a lot of space from each other, because when wind goes by a turbine, it adds turbulence to the air. Improper spacing can reduce the efficiency and add a fair amount of wear and tear on turbines.
